Our Pigs

Piggy

Wilbur

Our pigs were both strays we adopted through the Ottawa Humane Society. People sometimes get a potbellied pig as a pet without really knowing what they are getting into. They are wonderful, intelligent creatures, but average about 125 pounds when full grown. Males MUST be neutered or they will obsess about mating, grow tusks and be aggressive.

The pigs are truly the cleanest animals in the barn. They do roll in mud to cool off (they like it when we provide a kiddy pool in the summer). They will not go to the bathroom in their own stall in the barn. In the winter, they always go into a stall farthest from their own and in the summer they leave the barn to go to the bathroom.

Our older pig is kind of grumpy these days, but smaller Wilbur still likes attention and a good back scratch. Maeve has taught them to do "high nose" by touching their nose to the palm of her hand.
