Alpacas are related to llamas and camels. They are raised for their very fine fibre
and are also good guard animals on a farm. In Canada, alpacas must have their coats shorn
each spring or the 4" thick fleece will make them overheat.
Alpacas are very easy animals to keep. We shear them once a year, give them medicine for
de-worming and disease prevention, trim their toenails and feed them hay and alpaca pellets
to ensure they get all the nutrients they need. They are protective of the other
animals in their territory and do not try to escape. They choose certain spots to use as
a communal alpaca toilet.
Alpacas make an interesting humming sound and are curious animals. It is best to interact
with them with your head forward and hands behind your back. Squatting down and letting
them approach often works. They aren't keen on hands.
